Romance, adventure, comedy and action all collided into one novel. Cassandra Clare sets her exciting novel in the heart of New York City, with bustling crowds of people and a line of yellow taxis queueing in the street. But under the façade, we encounter a world of Shadowhunters, demons, faeries, and werewolves. A far cry from how the story begins, with two friends on a night out.
The narrator, Clary Fray, is an average girl leading an average life. But unexpectedly she meets Jace, a cocky bad boy who leads a life full of risk and danger that Clary can’t help but stumble into. Dark secrets of Clary’s past begin to surface as strange, unexplained events surround her, leading her to question whether she truly knows herself. Plot twists and mysteries weaves the novel together, which definitely left me gripping the book until the last page.
The novel is a continuous adventure about Clary finding her true identity. Along the way she falls in love, makes enemies, and discovers her abilities. I find Clary a powerful representation of women as she surprises everyone with the fierceness and stubbornness she has attained. Clary is a fierce female with a brave heart and will stop at nothing to get what she needs.
An action packed adventure, which leaves you exhilarated and causes adrenaline to course through your body, it had definitely left me excited and ready for the next book. But Clary is not the only one who has dark enigmas of the past… Jace Wayland is an over-confident, character who claims to have secrets of his own which definitely left Clary and I drawn to him.
The Mortal Instruments have highlighted the skills portrayed by Cassandra Clare, as she constructs the beautiful city of New York, where under all the glamour lies a world where a war is beginning to rise and a common enemy to all is about to return ready to strike at their next target: Clary.
Love triangles form, relationships are forbidden and secrets of the past become revealed. Cassandra Clare sets the world of Shadowhunters within the city of New York, where dangers lurk in every dark corner.
