Book Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate Lauren Kate gives you an insight into the world of fallen angels and shadows through the mysteries and secrets Luce is trying to discover. Luce is a normal teenager who leads a normal life up until the moment she allegedly commits a crime when her boyfriend ‘disappears’, or in her perspective is burned by Luce’s touch. She is then forced to go to Sword and Cross, a reform school, where she meets the enigmatic Daniel Grigory. Despite Daniel’s show of no interest in Luce and attempts to push her away, she still finds him compelling and cannot help but feel that she has met him before…Throughout the novel, Luce becomes determined to uncover the secrets hidden by Daniel. Along the way, a love triangle forms between Luce, Daniel and Cameron, who is a dark and dangerous character that has secrets of his own. However this is not the whole story, someone has targeted Luce and would do anything to prevent her from uncovering the mysteries and falling in love with Daniel. Luce becomes a sacrifice throughout the battle between the two sides of the fallen angels and the shadows begin to grow as she understands the true reality of her world. Lauren Kate depicts a thrilling atmosphere through the gothic romance and the tragic events that occur throughout the story. Both Daniel and Cameron are captivating characters as they disguise their true identities and both wear masks of deception, always trying to mislead Luce from finding out the truth. Their mysteries left me curious and interested, which caused me to grip the novel until the end. Despite Fallen being a young adult fiction book, the story is thought-provoking in itself as it makes us realise that not all is what it seems and people have dark secrets that may leave you to question who they really are.To many, Luce can be conveyed as a timid and probing character as she follows Daniel in order to uncover the truth yet she is constantly intimidated by the world she has been forced into at Sword and Cross. However I admire her determination when her curiosity grows and her development of a strong mind due to her gain of independence.Fallen, is a novel I would highly recommend for those who love a forbidden romance, an occurrence of mysterious events and a thrilling atmosphere.
