He's an English 34-year-old who works in a supermarket, enjoys playing board games and has a pet lizard named Aaron. A fairly average man so far, right? But like almost all fictional characters - and a lot of everyday people once you get to know them, probably - he's not as dull as you may think.
For starters, he can eat extraordinary amounts of food in one sitting. In fact, one of his many failed relationships ended on the first date when during a supposedly romantic meal at a fancy restaurant, Fortaine devoured a steak and chips and two glasses of Coke in 5 minutes, leaving his love interest to awkwardly finish her meal in silence as he waited.
He's also not great at getting to know people, like the time at the hospital when he asked the mourning relative of a man who'd just passed 'What do you think of death?' And lizard Aaron is pretty much his closest friend, sharing conversation and playing board games together.
It might be worth mentioning that Fortaine has an interest in sorcery which began aged 10, in particular studying it and practising all those crazy spells a wizard may have tucked away in his hat. And although he wants to become a better person and live in a more harmonised world, having been bullied throughout his life, he constantly battles the temptation to exact revenge on those who harm him. So, will he use magic for good or evil? That's for you to decide.
