Marketing as an author - 6 Month Course

For many authors, writing is the easy part. The role of an author does not finish just because words have been written on the final page; editing, marketing and promoting must become second nature! This course aims to support authors who are unsure about how to market themselves and their work.

1) Meet the market.

In this section, the definition and elements within marketing will be discussed.


Develop a marketing plan and a professional development plan (500 words).

2) Blogging.

In this section, the role of blogging will be explored, advice on how to start blogging and various blog ‘starter’ topics will be supplied.


Write a blog on a relevant topic (500-800 words).

3) Websites, social media and appearances.

In this section, we will examine the role and impact of websites, social media and public appearances as well as how this can relate to your book sales.


Plan a short speech for an audience who have gathered to hear about your experiences as an author (1,000 words).

4) Podcasts.

In this section, we will discuss using podcasts as a way of communicating with your readers.


Write a transcript of your first podcast.

5) Building a brand.

In this section, the notion of ‘author as a brand’ will be analysed. Furthermore, the benefits that arise from branding will be discussed as well as methods of developing your own ‘author’ brand.


Write a short essay on how you would approach branding.

6) Time management.

In this section, the time management of an author will be explored. Methods of balancing all your roles as an author will be suggested.


Provide a detailed break down of your average week and plan in all the other relevant author-related activities. Write a set of goals you would like to achieve in the next two years (1,000 words).
