This course is designed for people who want to write non fiction of any kind. It will look at the different types from blogs to books, how to research, organize, source images, edit and prepare for publishing.

1) Types of non-fiction writing.

Non-fiction writing covers many sectors, from general books to specialist areas such as business and the law. Identifying the types, the styles and the different markets

Assignment:

Choosing a sector and identifying examples of three different types of non fiction writing

2) Research and its importance.

How to research a non-fiction book and where to find information including Internet, use of documents and original material, newspapers, archives

Assignment:

Choose a topic relevant to your interests and identify the research materials that you could use to create a piece of non fiction writing

3) Organising material and writing styles.

A look at organising material, how to put it in order, the different writing styles involved in for example a blog as compared to a book, academic writing compared to general interest writing

Assignment:

Create a short non fiction piece of writing or a synopsis for a book

4) Sourcing images & writing captions.

Images can be extremely important in non fiction books. Copyright issues. How to source images and write captions to go with them,

Assignment:

Find three images and create captions to go with a short piece of non fiction writing of your choice

5) Editing, proof reading and indexing.

How to edit, proof read and create a simple index for a book, or to identify SEO words if aiming for internet publishing

Assignment:

Edit, proof read and index one of your earlier pieces of work

6) Publishing methods.

How to find a publisher/agent, Self publishing E books, Other forms of non fiction publishing eg blogs, features, Writing a proposal to a publisher/magazine etc

Assignment:

Create a publishing proposal
